The Role

What a Play Specialist Does

A Play Specialist is a child-development professional who uses play as the tool — never drills, never pressure. Here is what that looks like in every session.

Observe how your child moves

Every visit starts with watching — how your child balances, reaches, climbs, and plays — so we know exactly what to support.

Design play with a purpose

Obstacle courses, ball games, and movement challenges are chosen to build a specific skill for your child’s stage.

Coach through connection

Encouragement instead of correction. Children feel safe to try, wobble, and try again — which is how confidence grows.

Adapt to your child

Activities are modified on the spot, so every child — including those with developmental differences — gets a real win.

Partner with parents

You leave with simple, practical ideas to keep the progress going at home, all week long.

Why It Works

The Benefits of Physical Therapy Informed Play

Physical-therapy-informed means our play experiences are built on the same movement milestones and progressions a pediatric physical therapist uses — delivered entirely through games your child wants to play again.

Balance & Coordination

Stepping stones, beams, and hopping games train the balance systems that make walking, running, and sports feel easy.

Strength for Growing Bodies

Climbing, crawling, carrying, and pushing build the core and shoulder strength that supports posture and fine motor skills.

Body Awareness & Motor Planning

Children learn where their body is in space and how to plan a movement — the foundation of handwriting, dressing, and self-care.

Sensory Regulation

Movement and heavy work help children organize big feelings, focus longer, and settle more easily after play.

Confidence & Resilience

Practicing hard things in a playful setting teaches "I can do hard things" — and that carries into the classroom.

Social Play & Turn-Taking

Group games build sharing, waiting, following directions, and the joy of doing something together.

Play Specialists are not a replacement for therapy. When a child needs clinical support, we work alongside your pediatrician, physical therapist, or early intervention team — and tell you honestly when a referral would help.

What to Expect

Inside a Play Session

1

Connect & warm up

A familiar song, a hello game, and big whole-body movement to wake up the muscles and settle into the room.

2

Move & build skills

The heart of the session: an obstacle course or movement game designed around the skills your child is working on.

3

Explore & create

Open-ended play — building, balancing, pretending — where children solve problems and take healthy risks.

4

Reflect & share

A calm finish, a moment to celebrate effort, and a quick note home about what your child accomplished today.

Give your child a place to move, play, and grow.
